What is a Vascular or Doppler Ultrasound?
A vascular ultrasound, also called a duplex or doppler scan, is a diagnostic test that uses sound waves to examine the blood vessels of the body. This safe and non-invasive scan is able to provide detailed, real time information without the use of radiation.
A doppler ultrasound uses special technology to allow the accredited sonographer to study the blood flow in your arteries and veins. The most common studies performed are the arteries in the neck (carotid arteries). These supply blood to your brain and face. Other common vessels examined are the renal arteries supplying your kidneys. Scans of the veins and arteries in the legs are looking for blockages, narrowing of the arteries, thrombosis, clots (DVT) or abnormal valves in the veins. Varicose veins may also be evaluated.
Often during the doppler scan you will hear strange noises as the signals from the flowing blood are converted to sound.
